Detroit WebComicon, September 13-14
If you were near Ferndale, Michigan this weekend, you felt the buzz around the Rust Belt Market. The WebComicon rolled into town, and was two days of meeting artists and enjoying the creativity the webcomic community offers.
One of the best parts of the weekend is meeting the people behind the comics. The special event area at the Rust Belt Market was set up for all of the creators to display their art and sell physical materials and books. Creators were friendly and engaged with the crowd attending the event… alot of sketching was going on.
Panel and workshops were held adjacent to the Market. Highlights from the “Turning your hobby into a business” panel were:
- Don’t wait to make it perfect -publish your material so people can see it and you can gain experience and feedback… If you wait for it to be perfect, you’ll never publish
- Find your community that can support and sustain what you’re doing
- Engaging with platforms – read the contract before signing… Have a lawyer and book agent review what you sign beforehand
- Shamelessly plug… don’t apologize for being proud of what you’re creating and sharing with others
- Top advice – keep the process of creating your webcomic fun…
- If you’re utilizing Patreon, then make this a place where you’re providing exclusivity
Overall, a well organized event and the creators were welcoming and engaged with the audience. Panels were conversational, and the tone of the event was very chill… Looking forward to next years event..
